SLOUGH NEWS

Number                                                                                                                                                                         spring2010

It’s been well over a year since our last newsletter, and so much has happened that I don’t even know where to begin.
Well, first of all, Slough Food is now both a restaurant and a wine and cheese shop.  We bought a panini machine to grill two house sandwiches:  a prosciutto, basil, mozzarella and a roasted tomato, basil, mozzarella.  We serve a simple mixed greens salad.  And we offer any combination of meat and/or cheese plate samplers.  Also, we changed our liquor license with the State, allowing us to serve beer and wine by the glass.  Or by the bottle, yes, which really is the best deal.  You may choose any bottle in the shop, paying only retail price plus a five dollar corkage fee.  This is an exceptionally good deal.
Slough Food has indoor seating.  James Reisen, from the Lucky Dumpster, built two bars that seat two people each.  And the bar stools were built by Amy Carson of Bitters Company in LaConner (and Seattle).  Austin Robbins created a bench and table (seats 5 or 6) that is a work of art.  Even if you don’t need anything from the shop, it’s worth the trip to Edison just to see the craftsmanship of our local woodsmiths.
And then there’s the Slough Food Courtyard:  flowers, wildlife, slough-side-seclusion, and two picnic tables – one is a twelve foot long redwood beauty built by James Reisen.  The redwood came from Duluth Timber Company here in Edison which reclaims lumber from deconstructing old buildings.  This particular reclaimed redwood came from the Pier 3 Embarcadero in San Francisco.
Lastly, a heartfelt THANK YOU.  On April 16th, Slough Food turns six years old.  We wouldn’t be here without your generous support.
Salute!
R. John DeGloria

Burdwood Farms Organic Eggs

We call them Julia’s Eggs.  Julia is the one who coddles these hens into laying such fabulous eggs:  rich and thick whites, with sturdy, golden, globules of yolk.  Once you start eating real eggs again, you’ll never go back.  Now only $5.00 per dozen.  It’s a good idea to call ahead a reserve yourself a dozen.

This wine received 89 points from The Wine Spectator.  And the price:  $7.99!  Mostly Grenache with a little Syrah, this well made, easy drinking red is your new house wine.

2008 Berger Gruner Veltliner

We drink a lot of this.  At $12.99 for a 1 Liter bottle, we can afford to.  Don’t worry about pronouncing the grape, just know this delicious white wine drinks fresh and zippy.  Excellent oyster wine.

Wine Discounts:  10% off any six bottles; a generous 15% off any twelve or more bottles.
mixed case example:  9 bottles of Borsao and 3 bottles of Berger = 110.88 (less 15%) = $94.25

Gothberg Farms

I know, I’ve highlighted Rhonda Gothberg’s cheeses before, and here I’ll rave again.  Rhonda is impassioned, talented, and hard working.  And it shines through when tasting her exceptional La Mancha breed, goat’s milk cheeses.  Currently offering:  Plain (although there’s nothing plain about it) Gouda, Garlic and Chili Flake Gouda, and Cumin Gouda.  Plus, Feta and Fresh Chevre!

Superb Olive Oils

Slough Food sells bulk olive oil.  Bring your own clean, empty bottle (old wine bottles work great!), or purchase one from us.  This is an easy and affordable way to stock your pantry with a variety of fresh, high quality olive oils.  Not just for salads now, we find that having good olive oil around makes us try it on many foods.  We like to keep some on the table, just as we have salt, to be used as a finishing flavor.
  • Ciutti  $7.99/500ml    good color, lighter flavor; we also cook with this Sicilian oil.
  • Colli Etruschi  $19.99/500ml    Caninese olives from Lazio, Italy; rich, full flavored, personal favorite.
  • Merula  $17.99/500ml    mostly Arbequina olive blend from Spain; bright, flavorful, unique.
  • Trampetti  $19.99/500ml    Moraiolo olives from Umbria, Italy; organic, great color, smooth.
Tasting Events return to Slough Food!  An emailing of the schedule will follow.
