From the Campo dei Fiori farmers market in Italy to beautiful Edison, WA

In 1999 I was fortunate to have lived and studied in Rome. I instantly recognized the delicious beauty found in the famous open-air Campo dei Fiori farmers market, where I would shop daily. The Campo’s delicatessen, or alimentare, was where I bought my pasta, meats and cheeses. I will never forget the owner of the alimentare slicing prosciutto the old-fashioned way – with a knife – and greeting everyone who walked through his door with a warm and sincere buon giorno!

I opened Slough Food, my Edison alimentare, in the spring of 2004. After working many years in the restaurant industry (Jake O’Shaughnessy’s, Roche Harbor ResortManele Bay Hotel, Salvatore's Ristorante), the retail wine business (Pike and Western Wine Shop, Whole Foods) and the import and wholesale wine business (Triage Wines), I was thrilled to return to the beautiful, bountiful Skagit Valley where I grew up.

In the years since, both Slough Food and the wonderful town of Edison, have evolved into a destination for good eating. Slough Food is now as much a café as a delicatessen, combining choice items from our shelves and deli case, European favorites with our local gems, to create simple meat and cheese plates, sandwiches, salads, and daily soups, and of course, beer and wine by the glass.

Salute!
R. John DeGloria
